Improving victims experience of the criminal justice system - consultation response

Victim Support Scotland (VSS) is the largest organization in Scotland dedicated to assisting those affected by crime. We provide free, confidential support through practical help, emotional assistance, and essential information to victims, witnesses, and others involved in the justice system. Operating across all local authorities and every Sheriff and High Court in Scotland, VSS strongly advocates for the establishment of an independent Victims’ Commissioner. This role must be free from government influence to effectively represent victims' voices and hold the Scottish Government and other bodies accountable for upholding victims' rights. VSS also emphasizes the importance of enshrining the Commissioner’s role in statute to provide clear, legally defined powers, and believes the Commissioner should be accountable to the Scottish Parliament to ensure transparency and minimize political interference. Feedback from victims highlights the crucial need for both independence and accountability in making the Commissioner effective in advocating for victims' rights.
