Theft

Theft is a crime in which a person’s property or belongings are taken from the owner without their consent.

Depending on the severity of the theft, the location or the value – sentimental or monetary – theft can affect people in different ways. The following are a few feelings you may experience in the aftermath:

  • A fear of leaving the house
  • Feeling unsafe
  • Flashbacks to the incident
  • Nightmares
  • A sense of being overwhelmed
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Financial loss

It is a normal reaction to a crime to have some or all of these emotions but that does not diminish the impact it may have on your ability to carry out your normal daily tasks.

Victim Support Scotland can provide bespoke support and information to people affected by theft which is designed to suit your needs. First and foremost, we will listen to you and allow you the time to talk about your experiences. You will be put in touch with a trained supporter with experience in dealing with such cases who can offer nonjudgmental support and information.

The support we can offer includes:

  • Information and advice around personal safety
  • Emotional help for as long as you need it
  • Advocacy services to assist you when corresponding with other agencies
  • Help understanding the criminal justice system and its processes

Our aim is to make you feel safer and emotionally stronger as well as better informed of your rights.

If you or someone you care about has been affected by theft, please know that you are not alone. Whoever you are, whatever the situation, we can help you.

You can access our services regardless of whether you have reported the crime or not to the police. Our services are free, independent and confidential.*

*We will only alert someone else if we feel you are at risk to yourself or to others.
