Victim-centered approach - 2019 update

Victim Support Scotland (VSS) is dedicated to ensuring that all those affected by crime receive high-quality support to recover from their experiences. This commitment is articulated in the VSS Strategy 2018-2021, which places victims and witnesses at the heart of the Scottish justice system. The report on the "Victim-Centred Approach" provides an update on the development of a new model of victim care services aimed at enhancing support for victims and witnesses.

VSS has made significant progress in implementing this victim-centred approach. Key initiatives include the Support for Families Bereaved by Crime (SFBC) service, which provides personalized support to individuals affected by serious crimes. VSS is also actively engaged in the Victims Taskforce and is involved in innovative projects such as the Justice Centre in Inverness and a partnership with Children 1st to adopt modern service design concepts like the Icelandic Barnahus model. These efforts reflect a commitment to continuous evaluation and improvement of VSS practices to ensure they remain focused on the needs of victims.

Looking ahead, VSS's involvement in the Victims Taskforce will be crucial to the successful rollout of a victim-centred approach across Scotland. By incorporating the voices and experiences of those affected by crime, VSS aims to create a justice system that is compassionate, efficient, and truly centred around victims' needs. The goal is to make lasting, meaningful changes that empower victims and witnesses, ensuring they have a stronger voice in the justice process and receive the support they need to recover from their experiences.
