Meet our volunteers: Jacqui

Volunteers are at the heart of Victim Support Scotland. They come from all walks of life, with our volunteer roles designed to flexibly fit into any lifestyle.

Jacqui has volunteered in our Dundee team since June 2024. We spoke to Jacqui to find out a bit more about her volunteering journey.

What motivated you to volunteer with VSS?

"I heard an advertisement for VSS on the radio one day and I liked the sound of it. The only thing that put me off was the 12-week training programme. I decided to think about it. I spoke to a friend about it and she encouraged me to apply and I’m so glad that I did.

"The training was straightforward and I managed to complete it with no problems. I’m a good listener and I like to meet new people and listen to their stories. Empathy is an important quality to have too. I also firmly believe in letting people know they have their independence and that they have choice. I meet service users where they are at in their journey and I’m led by their needs."

What is the most rewarding part of your role?

"If I have supported someone through their evidence, seeing the relief on their faces once it is complete makes me feel like I’ve done a good job. I appreciate the acknowledgement of thanks and the impact that I’ve had on them for the day. Sometimes it can feel like we don’t or haven’t done that much, but seeing someone leave court confidently makes me know I’ve been helpful."

How do you fit in your volunteering around your lifestyle?

"I’m quite structured in my everyday life and I like to stick to a routine. I like that I can set the same day aside each week to volunteer. I also appreciate that I’m able to attend the office to speak to staff face-to-face if I have a problem or concern. I’m always welcomed with plenty of tea and biscuits on hand!"
