Volunteers play a vital role at Victim Support Scotland. They support people impacted by crime in communities throughout Scotland - talking through their experiences, offering practical advice and guidance, and simply being there when they are most needed.
Kharlene is a volunteer with our team in Dundee, and manages to fit her volunteering around being a busy mum of three. Kharlene told us a bit about her volunteering journey with VSS so far.
What made you want to volunteer with VSS?
"I’m a full-time mum to three children and I wanted to have something that was just for myself. I also have a lived experience and because of that, I wanted to give back and make a difference."
What is the most rewarding part of your role?
"When I have completed a support session either in court or in the community, I get great job satisfaction from seeing them complete a difficult day and leave that little bit lighter. It’s always so lovely to be thanked for support too.
"Being a volunteer has taught me that listening is so important. I’m a natural ‘fixer’, and through supporting victims and witnesses of crimes, I have learned to listen, validate and offer support where I can. Sometimes that is all that person needs.
"On a personal note, I feel more than just a mum when I’m here. I’m doing an adult thing! Support from staff is great. I get to talk, socialise and seek advice when I need it."
How do you fit in your volunteering around your lifestyle?
"I have a set day that I volunteer on for childcare reasons, but there is flexibility and I can change my days if needed. Staff are flexible and understanding if childcare falls through at the last minute. My youngest is about to start nursery, so I’ll be able to change days more easily.
"If you’re thinking of applying, I would say… Do something for you. Learn new skills, learn how to deal with circumstances and meet with people from all walks of life.
"It’s such rewarding role. I feel proud to say that I ‘work’ for VSS."
