Meet our volunteers: Susan

Volunteers are the foundation of what we do at VSS. Volunteers' Week is the perfect time to celebrate and recognise them, as well as get to know them a bit better!

Susan has been a volunteer with VSS since 2021, and volunteers with our Dundee team. Here, in Susan's own words, she tells us what motivates her to volunteer and how it fits around her lifestyle.

What drew you to volunteer with VSS?

"After retirement, I had more time on my hands. I have a background in teaching and guidance with young people, and often these young people were vulnerable. I thought it would be an easy and logical transition to volunteering with VSS.

"I had looked at other volunteering opportunities, but they didn’t suit me. I like the flexibility of the role. I can enjoy my retirement without being tied down to volunteering. I’m able to take time to travel and go on holiday."

What is the most rewarding part of your role?

"I enjoy meeting new people. Everyone has a story to tell and it’s a privilege to be a part of it, whether I meet them for an hour or have spent the whole day in court with them.

"They invariably thank me, and I enjoy the feel-good factor that comes from it. I also enjoy the small social side that comes with it. I like to chat with the other volunteers and staff, too."

How does volunteering fit into your lifestyle?

"One of the best things about this sort of volunteering is the flexibility. I have another volunteer job as a simulated patient for the students at Ninewells. For both jobs, I can pick and choose my days of work.

"This allows me to look after my disabled husband, visit grandchildren, play bridge three times a week, walk and cycle with friends, become a 'lady who lunches' and most importantly, take UK and foreign holidays whenever I want. Volunteering fits around my lifestyle."

If you'd like to get involved with volunteering for Victim Support Scotland, we'd love to hear from you!
