This week marks Student Volunteering Week. We hear from Anna, who has been volunteering alongside her studies at Glasgow Caledonian University.
“I’m currently in my fourth year studying Applied Psychology at Glasgow Caledonian University.
“I’d like to work in the field of forensic psychology, and volunteer experience is beneficial when applying for the master’s course I wish to attend, and that led to me volunteering at Victim Support Scotland.
This experience has greatly improved my confidence speaking to people who are experiencing difficult situations and has taught me a lot regarding Scotland’s criminal justice system. Everyone at the National Support Centre – Victim Support Scotland’s free helpline – has been very kind and helpful and created a very supportive environment, so I felt comfortable straight away.

“I have also felt supported in my academic work as there has been no pressure to attend volunteering whilst studying for exams or working to meet university deadlines. Victim Support Scotland has been very understanding in this area.
“Volunteering with Victim Support Scotland has given me experience and skills that will help me not only move forward in my academic career but also help me in navigating scenarios in my day-to-day life. I would recommend it to anyone who requires experience whilst at university.”
