Giving evidence in court
Giving evidence as a victim of domestic abuse can be a difficult and harrowing experience.
If you are going to court, Victim Support Scotland can guide you through the process by helping you understand what to expect, as well as helping to organise special measures.
We can help you before the trial and on the day of the trial, even if you have not been in touch with us before. Just ask for Victim Support Scotland at the court reception desk of any court in Scotland.
Ahead of the trial, VSS can help reassure you about the court process and what to expect in your role as a witness.
Our Support Co-Ordinator’s and volunteers will be able to tell you about agencies that are involved in your case, and who may be best to answer any questions you may have. We can also speak to agencies for you if this is appropriate.
Supporting you ahead of your trial
Ahead of the trial you will also be able to access the court for a familiarisation visit, so you know in advance where everything is and what to expect on the day of the trial. Alternatively, you can access our virtual tours for all courts in Scotland by clicking here.
Our staff and volunteers can also help you with practical matters such as filling in court expenses forms or finding your way around the building.
Your right to special measures
As a domestic abuse victim, you will be offered special measures, such as screens or in-court supporters, so you can give your best evidence as a witness. Click here to find out more.
If you are granted the opportunity to write a victim statement telling the court how the abuse may have affected you, we can help you write this.
Bespoke evidence rooms at our offices in Glasgow – providing a safe, comfortable and trauma-informed alternative to giving evidence in court.
Our new office in Glasgow has specially developed support suites where victims and witnesses are also able to give evidence. This is available for all victims, especially people who have been traumatised by the crime they have experienced and feel unable to face the accused.
