VSS impact in 2016-17
Victim Support Scotland’s 16/17 annual report is out today, 21 September, illustrating the positive impact of our work.
We are proud to have exceeded our targets for the year, supporting over 225,000 people who have been affected by crime.
This work could not have been done without the excellent support of over 570 volunteers who have contributed a whopping 111,663 hours to helping victims and witnesses. In fact, VSS is one of the first charities to receive the Volunteer Charter Award highlighting the dedication of volunteers to improve lives.
The report details the support that VSS has provided to victims and witnesses throughout Scotland, including:
- 2,876 hate crime cases
- 5,184 domestic abuse cases
- 26,682 violent crimes
- 7,626 children and young people cases
These are shocking numbers, so as well as supporting people, we are committed to raising awareness, influencing policy and affecting change on behalf of victims and witnesses.
We contributed to policies, consultations, legislation and strategies for the Scottish Government, British Transport Police, Scottish Courts and Tribunal Service, Scottish Prison Service and Parole Board of Scotland, amongst many others.
Finally, we have trained hundreds of people in the impact of the varied crime, and have professionally accredited all external courses so that they officially contribute to professional development.
